Peter’s Pub, located at 1 Johnson Place, Dublin 2, occupies one of the city’s most historically significant and enduring hospitality sites. The building commenced life in 1752 as an opulent Georgian townhouse, reflecting the elegance and prosperity of eighteenth-century Dublin. Over the decades, its purpose evolved in tandem with the changing social and commercial life of the capital.

In 1832, the premises entered a new chapter when Bernard Maguire established a licensed premises and provisions store on the site. By 1846, under the stewardship of John Watson, the business had developed into a thriving city tavern. Watson catered to a growing clientele with cold ham and mutton dishes, while shellfish delicacies such as oysters, cockles and mussels became popular staples, enhancing the tavern’s reputation among Dubliners.

A further transformation occurred in 1865 when John Byrne, Tea, Wine and Spirit Merchant, took over the premises. Byrne astutely capitalised on the considerable footfall generated by nearby Mercer’s Hospital, fostering a close social relationship between the two institutions that endured for many decades. The pub became an important meeting place for hospital staff, patients’ families and local residents alike.

At the dawn of the twentieth century, publican Michael Thompson commissioned a lavish Victorian renovation in 1900, creating a pub of distinctive Victorian character and charm. Sixteen years later, Peter’s Pub witnessed some of the most turbulent scenes in Dublin’s history. During the Easter Rising of 1916, Mercer’s Hospital treated approximately 278 injured non-combatants, and the premises stood as a silent observer to the bloodshed and upheaval that unfolded around it.

Today, Peter’s Pub has entered a new era under the ownership of the O’Malley Group, one of Dublin’s most successful licensed trade families. Through quiet and efficient stewardship, they have continued to reshape the social dimensions of the Irish pub while preserving the remarkable heritage and traditions that have made Peter’s Pub a cherished institution for almost 200 years.
